What do you do after a traffic accident?
Order matters. Here are the most important steps after a collision.
- 1
Secure the scene
Turn on hazard lights and set up a warning triangle. Make sure everyone is safe and call an ambulance if needed.
- 2
Fill in the accident reportIMPORTANT
Both parties fill in the standardised form on the spot β either digitally here or on paper. The form documents the course of events and the parties' information.
- 3
Take photos of the damage
Document the damage to both vehicles with photos. Include licence plates and the accident scene.
- 4
Report the claim to your insurance company
Use the link for your company above and report the claim. Have the accident report and photos ready.
- 5
Contact the police if needed
Police are not always required for simple collisions. But for personal injury, an intoxicated driver, or when fault is unclear, the police should be contacted.

Frequently asked questions
Am I required to report the claim to my insurance company?
Yes. You are obliged to report the claim to your insurance company as soon as possible after an accident. Most companies require notification within one to two weeks. Delays can reduce your compensation.
Do I need an accident report form to file a claim?
The accident report form (the European standard form) is not legally required, but it is strongly recommended. It documents both parties' information and the course of events, making the insurance process faster and easier.
What happens if the other party refuses to fill in the form?
You can report the claim without the other party's signature. Take photos of the vehicles, licence plates and the scene, note witness information and contact the police if necessary. Your insurance will process the case based on available documentation.
What is the deadline for reporting a claim?
Insurance companies generally have a deadline of one to two years after the accident, but the sooner you report, the better. Waiting too long can mean evidence disappears and processing becomes more difficult. Report the claim as soon as possible.
Fill in the form digitally β both parties
The digital accident report is filled in by both parties on the spot. Both receive a finished PDF by email β ready to send to the insurance company.
