Follow these steps in the right order — especially steps 1 and 2 are critical to do at the scene.

Secure the scene
Immediately turn on hazard lights and move the vehicle off the road if safe. Set up a warning triangle at least 50 meters behind the accident. Check for injuries and call 113 if needed.

Fill out the accident report
Complete the standardized form on the scene while the events are fresh in your memory. Share the link with the other party — both fill out their respective sections. The form documents vehicles, insurance, the incident and damages.

Take photos of the damage
Photograph both vehicles from multiple angles, close-up damage shots, both license plates, the accident scene and any signs, traffic lights or road markings relevant to the incident.

Exchange information
Make sure to exchange name, address, phone number, insurance company and policy number with the other party. This happens automatically if you fill out the accident report digitally.

Contact the police
Police are not always necessary for simple collisions without personal injury. Contact the police (02800) for personal injury, impaired driver, when liability is unclear, or when the other party flees.

Notify your insurance company
Use your insurance company's website or app to formally file the claim. Have the accident report, photos and any police report number ready. Most companies process claims within 1–3 business days.

What you should NOT do
Just as important as what you do is what you avoid after an accident.

Frequently asked questions
Do both parties need to fill out the accident report at the scene?
Ideally, yes — both parties fill out the form at the scene. If the other party refuses or leaves, fill out your part and note the other party's information as best you can. Contact the police if the other party flees without providing information.
What if the other party doesn't have insurance?
File the claim with your own insurance company. The Norwegian Traffic Insurance Association (TFF) covers damages caused by uninsured and unknown vehicles. More information at tff.no.
Do I need police for a minor parking damage?
No. For simple parking damages or collisions without personal injury, police are not necessary. A correctly completed accident report is sufficient for the insurance company.
How long do I have to report the damage?
You should report the damage to your insurance company as soon as possible, ideally within 24–48 hours. Most insurance companies have a formal deadline of 1 year from the accident date, but the sooner you report, the smoother the process.
